Free group automorphisms give rise to free-by-cyclic extensions in a natural way. In joint work with M. Bestvina and K. Fujiwara, we give a new proof of the fact that these groups are hyperbolic relative to a certain canonical collection of subgroups. I will outline our proof, which uses the geometry of flat surfaces.
