Smooth, closed, oriented 4–manifolds can be described by certain configurations of red, blue and green curves on surfaces called trisection diagrams. The attempt to construct interesting trisection diagrams "from scratch", i.e., without starting from a given 4–manifold, raises some interesting questions and puzzles about the combinatorics of curves on surfaces, which I will attempt to spell out.
