Title: The Casson invariant and its connections to gauge theory

In a previous talk, we discussed how the triangulation conjecture might be proven by the existence of an integer homology sphere that satisfies certain conditions. This time, we'll talk about how one might try to cook up an invariant to show such a manifold does not exist. Along the way we'll introduce a gauge theoretic analogue and the content of the Atiyah–Floer conjecture.
