The mapping torus of a graph immersion has word-hyperbolic fundamental group if and only if the corresponding endomorphism doesn't produce Baumslag-Solitar subgroups. Brinkman proved a similar theorem for free group automorphisms and, in this talk, I will highlight the new difficulties that arise when dealing with nonsurjective endomorphisms.
